Are you too stubborn to change?

by Fr. Michael Applegate

How stubborn are you? Honestly, how stubborn are you? Every one of us is stubborn. We are all stuck in our ways, and we do not like to change. We like to do the same thing day in and day out and not change. So, what will get you to get away from being stubborn and change for God and change for the better?

I bring this up because of a stubborn person that we hear in the gospel today. You might know him as doubting Thomas. I think part of him doubting is because he is slow to change and believe, even when everyone else would believe and change on people’s testimony that they have seen the risen Christ. Thomas does not. He needed to see with his own eyes the Lord before he would change and believe.

I believe that we all are like him a certain way. We need the Lord to come before us and tell us things for us to change or believe. We are so stubborn that we need God himself to tell us what we need to change before we will change it. This can be for anything in our lives from sin to just choosing to do something better. We like to do the same thing and not have to think about changing. We get anxious and worry about the unknown, which is what changing feels like, so we keep to what we know. Do not rock the boat.

God is calling us to change for Him, and I think we all know what needs to change, but what will it take for us to change? We will need to be like Thomas today where we need the Lord Himself come physically before us and say, “Change this?” Or will you change when some human reminds you that you tend to do this sometimes? Or will you be stubborn that you will only change if God Himself tells you? The only person that can make this decision is you. You are the only person who can make you change. No one, not even God, can force you to change. You will have to make the decision and keep with it.

Now is the perfect time to actually change for God and do not wait for Him to tell you because you will probably be waiting forever. What is that you should change today and do not wait because you will be better off if you did.
