During Mass, the Church invites us to express reverence not only with our hearts but also with our bodies, like with kneeling, genuflecting, and one of the most ancient and meaningful gestures is the simple bow of the head at certain holy names. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal instructs that we bow at the Name of Jesus (GIRM 275), recalling the words of Scripture: “At the name of Jesus every knee should bend” (Phil 2:10). This small act reminds us that His Name is holy, powerful, and worthy of worship. The Church also encourages a bow of the head at the name of Mary, the Mother of God, honoring her as the first disciple and the one whose faithful “yes” made our salvation possible; though not divine, she is venerated above all the saints. Likewise, we bow when the name of the saint of the day is mentioned, acknowledging their friendship with God and their intercession for us. These gestures—brief, quiet, and easy to overlook—are profound expressions of humility, attentiveness, and love. They help form our hearts by engaging our bodies in worship, reminding us that even the smallest movements can deepen our awareness of God’s presence and the holiness of His people.
Durante la Misa, la Iglesia nos invita a expresar reverencia no sólo con nuestro corazón sino también con nuestro cuerpo, como arrodillándonos, haciendo genuflexiones, y uno de los gestos más antiguos y significativos es la simple inclinación de la cabeza ante ciertos nombres sagrados. La Instrucción General del Misal Romano indica que debemos inclinarnos ante el Nombre de Jesús (GIRM 275), recordando las palabras de la Escritura: «Al nombre de Jesús toda rodilla se doble» (Filipenses 2:10). Este pequeño acto nos recuerda que Su Nombre es santo, poderoso y digno de adoración. La Iglesia también recomienda inclinar la cabeza ante el nombre de María, la Madre de Dios, honrándola como la primera discípula y aquella cuyo fiel «sí» hizo posible nuestra salvación; aunque no es divina, es venerada por encima de todos los santos. Del mismo modo, nos inclinamos ante el nombre del santo del día, reconociendo su amistad con Dios y su intercesión por nosotros. Estos gestos —breves, silenciosos y fáciles de pasar por alto— son profundas expresiones de humildad, atención y amor. Ayudan a formar nuestros corazones al involucrar nuestro cuerpo en la adoración, recordándonos que incluso los movimientos más pequeños pueden profundizar nuestra conciencia de la presencia de Dios y la santidad de su pueblo.
